Course Description
HEBREW III is an advanced course in Biblical Hebrew semantics and readings. The course covers a brief history of the Hebrew language related to the biblical period, including extra-biblical Hebrew texts such as epigraphical texts and textual witnesses to the Hebrew Scriptures. Prerequisite: Hebrew II.
Rationale of the Course
The rationale of this course is to develop mastery of Biblical Hebrew and gain an understanding of the development and transmission of the Hebrew Language. This course will be foundational for higher-level research.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will have the opportunity to or can:
a. Understand the development and transmission of the Hebrew Language in the biblical period.
b. Recognize a few Ancient Hebrew Inscriptions related to the biblical period.
c. Comprehend the value of the Masoretic Text.
d. Identify the Textual Witnesses to the Hebrew Text.
e. Analyze some passages from the Hebrew Scriptures along with their Textual Witnesses.
f. Evaluate the modern versions of the Hebrew Scriptures including the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia and their Critical Apparatus.
g. Apply the knowledge of Hebrew morphology, syntax, and semantics in the translation of biblical texts.
h. Demonstrate an understanding of the Hebrew Language by informed teaching and preaching from the Hebrew Bible.
